The Great Gatsby- Review

I went to see 'The Great Gatsby' with a friend this week and oh my life was it good. I must confess, I never did finish the book but after seeing the film, I'm glad I didn't, or there would have been no surprises.

In true Baz Luhrmann style, it was visually stunning. The casting choices were flawless. Toby Maguire as Nick didn't fill me with great joy when I heard he had been cast in the role, but he really surpassed my expectations and I think my brain has finally stopped thinking 'oh my god, Spiderman is in The Great Gatsby'. His performance was very strong and he portrayed his character beautifully.

Leonardo DiCaprio was, as usual, fabulous in the title role. His grasp on the Gatsby charm made me fall in love with him, in the same way I always do after watching Titanic or Romeo and Juliet. I had dismissed him as having 'let himself go' both physically and in the roles he takes. It was nice to see him in a love story again after Inception and Blood Diamond

Carey Mulligan was every inch the 1920's woman and portrayed Daisy just as I imagined her to be and her gentle tone complimented the, really rather sinister Joel Edgerton, as Tom.

From everything to the incredible costume to the eccentric parties to the phenomenal soundtrack, I can safely say this film made me desperately want to find my own Doctor Who and go and live in the 20's and go to one of Gatsby's parties.

Perhaps a little long, but in no way dull, it was the perfect way to pass a Sunday night. The only thing I would say is what on earth is the accent Leo is putting on? and after about 60 times, the repetition of 'old sport' in said accent can become a bit annoying. Other than that, really bloody good in my opinion. If you fancy a cinema trip this week then take a look at the trailer below.

Have you seen the film yet? What did you think?
